CURIOSITY

I've always been captivated by the early sea explorers. Completely on their own, most often with no reference or idea of direction, just pure belief. As far back as I can remember, I was fascinated with the skill and technical abilities required of all members of the crew. Sure, each sailor had their specialty, but they also needed to know almost every aspect of every job, function, and duty in the event they found themselves shorthanded for any number of reasons. I was entranced by why anyone would choose to embark on these fortuitous expeditions where it was very likely that no one would return home. I think most had the idea of fame and fortune, but all would have had to have this unrelenting sense of knowing what else was out there and what else was possible.

I envied the time in which they lived, that it was even a possibility to partake, and that sometimes with little to no training, they could be accepted as part of the crew. That opportunity was not as much about prior experience but a willingness to learn and master a craft that others taught simply by doing.

Storytelling

  • Why share all of this? is a fair question to be asking right now. I share these things and highlight my “experience // attributes” because they are what define me as a person, a professional, and as the philosophical way i approach most scenarios in life. The age we find ourselves in of increased process automation and the hype around quick access to skilled labor means that rarely are any of these Types of skills or abilities a reference points when positioning oneself for new gigs with employers or clients. Yet, (in my opinion) they can be monumental differentiators in a persons capacity in contributing to whatever objective is being presented to solve.

  • DESIGN - it matters

The Human response to design accounts for 45% of our willingness to engage.

Loss of productivity due to poor design can account for nearly 60% of a teams annual expected output.

You’re probably saying well yea, duh Jake no one wants an ugly product. And to that I say, touché right you are. However, when was the last time you heard anyone rave about an HR product being beautifully designed? I don’t recall any HR companies knocking down Web awwwards?

The point i am trying to make is, HR spends a lot of time and focus engaging employees or potential employees. Design, not just the look, but the way in which interaction happens is an extremely underappreciated aspect of boosting and fostering greater engagement.

  • PNW native who still has big dreams of winning Powerball and spending it all within 2 years. He grew up in a nondescript white middle-class repository, went to a no-name Higher-ED institution, and served in the US Air Force with less than honorable intentions.

His life mediocrity has helped several billion-dollar Tech Start-Ups scale & grow at an immense pace, leveraging human capital productivity, and accomplishing the elusive IPO.

In addition, Jake is a published musician, having produced tracks found on Spotify, iTunes, and Soundcloud while also being featured at EDC, Tomorrow Land & Ultra. His current projects are a secret so…pump the breaks yo, geezz!

Jake is based out of Portland and Seoul but is available to travel for longer consulting engagements if required.

  • During my 5th-grade year, I faced a major obstacle with reading and writing comprehension. Despite my efforts, it was clear that I was significantly behind, and the school administrators attributed it to simply being "slow." Determined to understand the root cause and find the best solution, I was forced to embarked on a journey that would consume several years of my childhood and educational progression. Eventually, specialists diagnosed me with a Visual Processing Disorder, which can present itself in various ways. In my case, it was concluded that Visual Discrimination and Sequencing impairments were likely responsible for my difficulties in reading comprehension and written syntax. To this day, I struggle with distinguishing between similar letters, shapes, colors, and processing visual information accurately and sequentially. In essence, my educational and professional path has been marked by numerous challenges. While we all encounter learning obstacles, I continue to face difficulties with even the most fundamental aspects.

Additionally, later in life, as learning and attention disabilities began to gain more focus, I was bestowed the label of "neurodivergent" as well. This doesn't typically show up as much as my VDP due to the extensive and in-depth coaching I was lucky enough to have access to throughout the years. Despite that, it still is there in my mind, constantly reminding me of its presence.

I have had to approach learning, thinking, and problem-solving differently from my peers, colleagues, and friends. I've always felt that people struggle to understand my thought process, which often deviates from the norm. Initially, this made me self-conscious and afraid, but I have come to see it as an advantage. It allows me to approach topics and problems in a unique way, offering uncommon solutions. Unfortunately, these are the types of contributions that are often overlooked when discussing diversity and inclusion in organizations. My information processing is significantlydifferent from the average person, and while my thoughts may seem obscure to others, I believe they hold value in their originality and potential merits.

    To be Neurodivergent means:

    — 3x times more likely to start multiple successful companies.

Demonstrate a 20% advantage in detecting visual anomalies, suggesting enhanced visual perception abilities.

    — More adaptable to changing work conditions, with a 25% higher score on a measure of adaptability compared to neurotypical individuals.

    — Exhibit greater resilience in the face of stress, with 30% lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol after a challenging task.

    — Maintain enhanced cognitive flexibility, aka. the ability to switch between tasks and adapt to new information quickly.

  • Much like my unique learning characteristics, which often go unaddressed as a potential attribute, so does my extensive musical training. I have played the piano since I was 4 years old and have spent much time creating, preforming, and developing this skill as much as possible. in fact there's a growing body of research suggesting that people with musical training or those who are highly musically inclined tend to exhibit certain cognitiveadvantages, which can manifest in better analysis and processing.

    — Enhanced pattern recognition: skilled at identifying patterns, which can translate into better analytical abilities in other domains.

    — Improved memory: particularly when it comes to remembering complexsequences and details.

    — Higher executive function: refers to a set of mental skills that help with planning, organization, and self-regulation. leading to better overall cognitiveperformance.

    — Increased creativity: demonstrate higher levels of creativity, which can be beneficial in problem-solving and generating new ideas.
